Mänikpāla, wife of the first king Maha-Sammata, was bewitched by the demon Māra. The demon Oḍḍisa cured her in a ceremony where he had to cut limes. Vishvakarma, architect and artificer of the gods, invented the first areca (supari) nut cutter अङकित्ता for the occasion.

Powdered areca (supari) nut is used as a constituent in some dentifrices. Other traditional uses include the removal of tapeworms and other intestinal parasites by swallowing a few teaspoons of powdered areca (supari) nut, drunk as a decoction, or by taking tablets containing the extracted alkaloids.
